Snippets of Kamuli, Uganda 2019

Meg, Irene, Rachel and Mark went to Maria's Care school in Kamuli, Uganda and worked with children and teachers. Here is a little of the work we did. We used drama games to create relationship and from there invested into the children emotional health. We also worked with the teacher looking at how to safeguard the children.

Irene Moss

Project Leader

Children and Adults

Irene trained at Arts Educational, London, gaining a BA (Hons) in Acting. Irene has performed since a young age and during her training taught drama, dance and fitness classes locally.

After some time working professionally, Irene decided to embark on a full-time teaching career. She is founder and principal of ‘Starburst Academy’, which offers performing arts tuition at their Saturday Academy in Watford, after-school clubs and holiday workshops. Irene is also Head of Drama, an English Teacher and a Form Teacher at a girl’s school in Gerrards Cross. Approximately 10 years ago, (or more!), Irene and Megan met whilst teaching for a theatre school.

Alongside her passion for teaching, Irene is an avid reader/writer and has completed an MA in Creative Writing. She has written numerous scripts for workshop productions and has directed and choreographed a number of student productions including Mary Poppins, Bugsy Malone, Alice in Wonderland, The Jungle Book and many more. She is also attempting her first children's book...!

Over the years, Irene has gained experience teaching students from age 3 – 18 as a performing arts teacher and up to age 85 as a fitness instructor.

Rachel Ohman

Children

Rachel is a qualified Occupational Therapist, graduated in 2017 with a previous degree in Drawing and Applied Arts in 2009. Recently working with vulnerable elderly people to establish secure living environments.

Rachel is keenly aware of the benefits of creative arts within therapy and was able to explore this through a recent trip to Latvia earlier this year working with children aged between 4 - 17 from socially damaged backgrounds.

Rachel has previous experience as an activities coordinator for vulnerable adults and working as a teaching assistant for children with special needs. She also has a martial arts instructor qualification and previously ran classes for her local club.

Mark Wheeler

Adolescents

Mark is a former Royal Marines Commando in the Heavy Weapons (Anti tanks) branch with ten years experience including Iraq (2009), Afghanistan (2011), search and rescue of refugees in the Aegean Sea (2016)and hurricane disaster relief in the Caribbean(2017).

On the 23rd of June 2017 Mark was awarded the QCB (Queens Commendation for Bravery) for actions taken trying to save refugee lives in the Aegean Sea.

Mark is a team medic with experience using his skills in Afghanistan, the Aegean Sea and here in the UK.

Mark is also a TRiM (Trauma Risk Management) practitioner. TRiM is a trauma-focused peer support system designed to help people who have experienced a traumatic, or potentially traumatic event. He used his TRiM whilst in the Aegean Sea helping his team to process some of the difficult situations they had to deal with.
